Assessing soybean leaf area and leaf biomass by spectral measurements

    Get PDF
Red and photographic infrared spectral radiances were correlated with soybean total leaf area index, green leaf area index, chlorotic leaf area index, green leaf biomass, chlorotic leaf biomass, and total biomass. The most significant correlations were found to exist between the IR/red radiance ratio data and green leaf area index and/or green leaf biomass (r squared equals 0.85 and 0.86, respectively). These findings demonstrate that remote sensing data can supply information basic to soybean canopy growth, development, and status by nondestructive determination of the green leaf area or green leaf biomass

Strategic Outsourcing: Evidence from the British Companies

Outsourcing has become an increasingly popular option for many organisations. But they vary in terms of activities being outsourced, reasons for and benefits from outsourcing, and how the decision was made. This article presents an empirical research on fourteen companies. It found out, a) in most cases it was the ā€˜peripheralā€™ support activity being outsourced with cost reduction as the primary driver; b) outsourcing decision was being made early in the process without active involvement of the in-house provider; and c) there were problems in supplier selection and management. The research identified pre-outsourcing decision process and post-outsourcing management as the two key areas that gave cause for concern, and offered recommendations for improvement

Preliminary study of the characteristics of a high Mg containing Al-Mg-Si alloy

An Al-20Mg-4Si high Mg containing alloy has been produced and its characteristics investigated. The as-cast alloy revealed primary Mg 2Si particles evenly distributed throughout an Ī±-Al matrix with a Ī²-Al 3Mg 2 fully divorced eutectic phase observed in interdendritic regions. The Mg 2Si particles displayed octahedral, truncated octahedral, and hopper morphologies. Additions of Sb, Ti and Zr had a refining influence reducing the size of the Mg 2Si from 52 Ā± 4 Ī¼m to 25 Ā± 0.1 Ī¼m, 35 Ā± 1 Ī¼m and 34 Ā± 1 Ī¼m respectively. HPDC tensile test samples could be produced with a 0.6 wt.% Mn addition which prevented die soldering. Solution heating for 1 hr was found to dissolve the majority of the Al 3Mg 2 eutectic phase with no evidence of any effect on the primary Mg 2Si. Preliminary results indicate that the heat treatment has a beneficial effect on the elongation and the UTS
